ArisTree presents Joana Vasconcelos’ first immersive installations in Hong Kong
ArtisTree presents ArtisTree Selects: Enchanted Forest by Joana Vasconcelos as part of Swire Properties Arts Month 2024. Running from 22 March to 28 April 2024, the works are the Portuguese visual artist’s first immersive installations in Hong Kong.

Combining textiles, lighting, and installation arts, two site-specific installations — Enchanted Forest and Valkyrie Seondeok — are set up in Two Taikoo Place in direct response to the city and community. Enchanted Forest is shrouded in darkness, with the only light coming from Vasconcelos’ signature kitted forms illuminated by hidden LEDs. For this installation, Vasconcelos was inspired by her time in Hong Kong, envisioning the city’s endless rows of skyscrapers as concrete trees that come alive at night.
Myth of the Commune: Valkyrie Seondeok is part of Vasconcelos’ long-running Valkyries series which some may recognise from MGM Macau. Inspired by powerful women who’ve made their mark on the world, this textile sculpture pays homage to the first reigning queen of Silla, Seondeok. Resembling a living organism, the installation is meant to radiate positive energy and forge connections among individuals who visit the place. Each section is given a different ambiance, finished with a variety of masterful techniques, and inspired by different objects including sunflowers, roses, coral, and Portuguese carnations.
“I invite visitors to immerse themselves in an entirely different dimension, where they feel blessed and connected, evoking a ‘WOW’ moment,” writes Vasconcelos. “Community spaces grant access to all, but they hold unexpected dynamics. Art within sparks questions that challenge people’s perception of their shared spaces and their way of living. In this exhibition, I aim to forge a connection with the community, happiness, peace, and everything happening in the world.”
